S stands for Super. Launched as a top-of-the-range format for the consumer. S-Video separates the signal from the chrominance (color) of the luminance signal (brightness). VHS tapes can be played back on S-VHS VCRs, but S-VHS tapes do not work on VHS VCRs. With 400 lines of resolution, the maximum tape length is 160 minutes.
